POSITION SUMMARY

The Kitchen Assistant supports the daily operations of the school kitchen by assisting with food preparation, meal service, and maintaining a clean and organized environment. This role works under the direction of the Kitchen Manager to ensure efficient, safe, and consistent kitchen operations.

CORE AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

Food Preparation & Service

  • Assist in preparing ingredients, including washing, chopping, and portioning
  • Support meal preparation and snack service as directed by the Kitchen Manager
  • Assist in setting up and serving meals to students and staff in a timely manner

Kitchen Operations & Environment

  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of kitchen spaces, including counters, floors, and storage areas
  • Wash dishes, utensils, and kitchen equipment
  • Ensure materials and supplies are properly stored and accessible
  • Support smooth kitchen flow during preparation and service

Inventory & Stocking

  • Assist with receiving and storing food deliveries
  • Monitor supply levels and communicate shortages to the Kitchen Manager
  • Support proper rotation of stock to ensure freshness and minimize waste

Collaboration & Communication

  • Work collaboratively with kitchen staff to meet daily service needs
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with the Kitchen Manager and team
  • Maintain a respectful and positive working environment

Compliance & Safety

  • Follow all food safety and hygiene regulations
  • Maintain cleanliness and sanitation standards at all times
  • Report equipment issues or safety concerns promptly

Operational Responsibilities

  • Support continuity of kitchen operations during staff absences or high-demand periods
  • Step into additional responsibilities as needed to ensure timely meal service
  • Maintain awareness of daily kitchen needs, including preparation, service, and cleanup

Professional Expectations

  • Experience in a kitchen or food service environment preferred
  • Ability to follow instructions and work both independently and as part of a team
  • Strong attention to cleanliness, organization, and efficiency
  • Ability to take initiative and respond to kitchen needs proactively
  • Commitment to maintaining a safe, respectful, and team-oriented environment

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand for extended periods
  • Ability to lift and carry kitchen supplies and equipment
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced kitchen environment
