POSITION SUMMARY
The Kitchen Assistant supports the daily operations of the school kitchen by assisting with food preparation, meal service, and maintaining a clean and organized environment. This role works under the direction of the Kitchen Manager to ensure efficient, safe, and consistent kitchen operations.
CORE AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
Food Preparation & Service
- Assist in preparing ingredients, including washing, chopping, and portioning
- Support meal preparation and snack service as directed by the Kitchen Manager
- Assist in setting up and serving meals to students and staff in a timely manner
Kitchen Operations & Environment
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of kitchen spaces, including counters, floors, and storage areas
- Wash dishes, utensils, and kitchen equipment
- Ensure materials and supplies are properly stored and accessible
- Support smooth kitchen flow during preparation and service
Inventory & Stocking
- Assist with receiving and storing food deliveries
- Monitor supply levels and communicate shortages to the Kitchen Manager
- Support proper rotation of stock to ensure freshness and minimize waste
Collaboration & Communication
- Work collaboratively with kitchen staff to meet daily service needs
- Communicate clearly and professionally with the Kitchen Manager and team
- Maintain a respectful and positive working environment
Compliance & Safety
- Follow all food safety and hygiene regulations
- Maintain cleanliness and sanitation standards at all times
- Report equipment issues or safety concerns promptly
Operational Responsibilities
- Support continuity of kitchen operations during staff absences or high-demand periods
- Step into additional responsibilities as needed to ensure timely meal service
- Maintain awareness of daily kitchen needs, including preparation, service, and cleanup
Professional Expectations
- Experience in a kitchen or food service environment preferred
- Ability to follow instructions and work both independently and as part of a team
- Strong attention to cleanliness, organization, and efficiency
- Ability to take initiative and respond to kitchen needs proactively
- Commitment to maintaining a safe, respectful, and team-oriented environment
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand for extended periods
- Ability to lift and carry kitchen supplies and equipment
- Ability to work in a fast-paced kitchen environment
